1877 25C Sailor Head Quarter Dollar, Judd-1499, Pollock-1652, Unique, PR63 PCGS. Designed by William Barber and nicknamed the Sailor Head design, it is nearly identical to the design of certain 1875 twenty cent, half eagle and eagle patterns, as well as dollar patterns from 1876. A coronet inscribed LIBERTY adorns a head of Liberty with the hair tied back with a ribbon. The reverse is of the regular dies for the 1877 quarter. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. When found, this obverse / reverse pairing is usually found in copper (Judd-1500). This is a unique silver striking. Its rarity as a silver strike is underscored by the silver plating of two of the copper pieces. The surfaces show obvious hairlining and hazy gray-blue toning. We see no contact marks worthy of mention on either side. For the collector pursuing completeness in the Sailor Head series, this is it. There are no other legitimate silver strikes of this pattern.
