2014 $50 One-Ounce Gold Eagle -- Struck On a .9999 Fine One-Ounce American Buffalo Planchet -- MS69 PCGS. According to an October 10, 2016 Coin World article, PCGS graded its first and only (so far) confirmed example of a 2014 $50 one-ounce Gold Eagle struck on a 2014 American Buffalo .9999 fine gold planchet, rather than the intended .9167 fine gold $50 American Eagle flan. This is the first coin certified, the discovery coin. One other example is thought to exist known, but yet to our knowledge it has not yet been certified.
Wrong planchet errors are virtually unknown in the U.S. gold series. There have been examples of non-gold coins struck on gold planchets (the few puzzling Indian Head cents struck on quarter eagle planchets come to mind), but the present coin is the only confirmed U.S. Mint gold issue on an incorrect gold planchet. Both the Gold Eagle and the American Buffalo $50 coins have the same diameter (32.7 mm), but the Buffalo planchet is thicker (2.95 mm vs. 2.87 mm). Their weights are not the same because of the different compositions -- the $50 American Buffalo weighs in at 1.0001 troy oz., while the $50 Gold Eagle fifty weighs 1.0909 troy oz.
The Coin World article quotes noted error coin dealer Fred Weinberg about a similar error involving a modern silver issue:
"A 1998 American Eagle silver dollar graded and encapsulated PCGS MS-68 in 2013, struck at the San Francisco Mint on a 38.1-millimeter .900 fine silver dollar commemorative coin planchet instead of the intended American Eagle 40.6-millimeter .999 fine silver planchet, subsequently traded hands privately for in excess of $50,000."
The current gold error was struck at the West Point Mint, as are all gold bullion coins. Coin World reports the Mint was contacted about the error, but has yet to respond how the wrong planchet was used, or how many coins could conceivably be involved. This is an opportunity to acquire the discovery coin -- certified at the nearly flawless MS69 grade by PCGS, an important and seemingly very rare U.S. gold error.
