Coins of Hawaii
1883 50C Hawaii Half Dollar MS65 PCGS. The hapalua was struck at the San Francisco Mint on Federal half dollar planchets. After Hawaii became a U.S. territory, most examples were recalled by banks and melted by the Treasury. The present lustrous and crisply struck Gem displays dappled lavender, tan-brown, and jade-green toning. A lens reveals only unimportant contact. Certified in a green label holder. Population: 13 in 65 (1 in 65+), 4 finer (11/16).
Ex: Donald E. Bently Collection (Heritage, 2/2014), lot 4364, which realized $7,637.50.
