Hobo Nickels
A Collection of 23 Hobo Nickels by the Known Carver, John Dorusa. This is an interesting collection of 23 hobo nickels that display the inscribed initials "JD" of early-modern carver John Dorusa. The distinctive signature is often positioned near the date area or on the collar of the carved subject. John Dorusa was a former coal miner from Pennsylvania who primarily made imitative carvings of classic original hobo designs by Bert Wiegand and George Washington "Bo" Hughes. Dorusa's carvings were primarily done between 1980 until his death in 1994, likely inspired by images published in Romines' 1982 hobo nickel reference. Today, the John Dorusa signed carvings are quite popular among collectors. This collection is an impressive cross-section of his work. A total of 23 nickels are included in this lot.
