Ingots
Mint of the United States at San Francisco, Undated, Type Three Oval Hallmark (1956), Cast Ingot, #38, Lot # 1. 999.75 Fine. 21.32 ozs. This undated large-size ingot has an oversized oval hallmark on the upper portion of the top side. It is parenthetically dated to 1956 because of the match between the Type Two cast and 1956-dated ingots with no repeat of serial numbers or lot numbers. This Type Three hallmark is more commonly associated with the reverse stamping of silver plates before they were cut into the Sheared Plate ingots and are rarely found on the obverse of cast examples. On both the small and large-sized hallmarks the first S in STATES is taller than expected. The surfaces are remarkably smooth and show even deep blue patina. An unusual and highly collectible ingot.
From The Dr. Steve Allen Collection.
