1880 $1 Metric Dollar, Judd-1646, Pollock-1846, R.7, PR67 Red and Brown PCGS. William Barber's Metric dollar depicts Liberty wearing a coronet with a border of pearls. The elaborate reverse displays a partial wreath of cotton and corn tied at the base, a ribbon, and the motto DEO EST GLORIA within a cartouche above. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. This majestic design was taken from the 1877 half union. Examples were struck in silver or goloid, copper, and aluminum. More than a dozen copper pieces are known, but predictably survivors with this much original red color are rare. This piece is tied with one other as the finest known among Red and Brown pieces. The surfaces show very little color that is not red. Slight portions of peripheral blue and deeper cherry-red can be seen around the obverse rim, but the collector of full red patterns should be pleased with this example. Deeply reflective fields and fully struck throughout.
