1884 5C Five Cents, Judd-1724, Pollock-1934, Low R.6, PR67 PCGS. CAC. Ex: Simpson. The Eastman Johnson "holey five cent" design. The obverse shows FIVE above and CENTS below a roughly octagonal opening in the planchet, with shields on either side. The reverse shows UNITED STATES OF AMERICA at the outer rim, with an inner circle of 13 stars and date 1884 below. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. Also struck in aluminum and a single white metal piece. Approximately two dozen examples are known in nickel, in with both thin and thick planchets. The fields on this example are boldly mirrored with sharply contrasting devices. The surfaces are remarkably well-preserved with olive-gold outer toning and metallic-blue hues at the interior. A remarkable Superb Gem specimen of this popular pattern.
