1759 (1965) Martha Washington Half Dollar Dollar Medalet, Judd-2143, Unlisted in Pollock, Low R.7, AU58 NGC. 184.64 grains. Composed of 58.3% copper, 34.3% zinc, and 7.2% silver, as indicated on the insert. This piece was received by NGC in March 2016. The alloy does not match any mentioned in "A Study of Alloys Suitable for Use as United States Coinage." Perhaps we can infer from its omission from that work that it was deemed unsuitable as a coinage alloy. It is also probable that this is a unique composition. The design is the usual Martha Washington obverse paired with the Mount Vernon reverse. Reeded edge. The peculiarity of the design would mean the coin never actually circulated, so what we see as rub was undoubtedly caused by friction from being carried as a pocket piece. Much of each side retains original brilliance while the devices are outlined in golden-russet patina. A very curious and most likely unique pattern.
