1857-D G$1 AU55 PCGS. Variety 9-L. The mintage of just 3,533 pieces does not fully explain the scarcity of the 1857-D when compared to the 1858-D or 1859-D, which have similarly low mintages yet are considerably more available. The issue lacked careful manufacturing as evidenced by this example, which shows an indifferent strike, small planchet problems, and varying sharpness of letters and numerals throughout both sides. Die clashing adds to the Mint-made surface anomalies on the coin. Still, attractive medium-gold surfaces display an attractive greenish tinge and mint luster shines brightly at the borders. Population: 19 in 55, 34 finer (11/16).
