Gold Dollars
1859-C G$1 MS60 PCGS. Variety 1. The final gold dollar coinage at the Charlotte Mint occurred in 1859, with a production of 5,235 pieces. Fewer than 250 representatives are believed to survive today in all grades, and Mint State pieces are genuinely rare. This Uncirculated offers satiny orange-gold luster with only light surface chatter to limit the grade. Considerable strike weakness is seen on the central relief elements, supporting this issue's reputation as one of the poorest struck dates in the Charlotte short set. Population: 1 in 60, 13 finer (10/16).
