Gold Dollars
1859-D G$1 AU58+ NGC. CAC. Variety 11-O. This scarcer variety is most easily distinguished by the location of the A in DOLLAR that is located entirely beneath the 9 in the date (the more commonly seen variant shows only partial centering below the 9). Few pieces were struck of the 1859-D (4,952), but a surprisingly high percentage have survived, when compared to other Dahlonega issues. The devices are better struck than other Type Three D-mint gold dollars, but high-point softness is still apparent on each side. The surfaces are original orange-gold and there are no abrasions worthy of mention other than a shallow, diagonal mark to the right of the 1 in the denomination.
