Early Quarter Eagles
1804 $2 1/2 14 Stars Reverse, BD-2, R.4 -- Cleaning -- PCGS Genuine. XF Details. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a, as usual. BD-2 is the only 1804 quarter eagle variety that is generally considered collectible, although examples are still scarce with fewer than 200 believed known. This die marriage features the second and final use of the obverse and the first of two uses of the reverse; the second use of the tail die was for the JR-2 variety of the 1804 dime. It is distinctive for its 14th star. The present BD-2 quarter eagle is well-struck in the centers but weak around the reverse border, as usual. Remaining detail is sharp for the XF grade level, although scattered hairlines suggest a light cleaning. A still-pleasing example of this popular date.
