Liberty Quarter Eagles
1840-C $2 1/2 AU55 PCGS. Variety 1. As the inaugural quarter eagle from the Charlotte Mint, the 1840-C is in demand by first-year type collectors as well as branch mint gold aficionados. This is an exceptionally well-produced and carefully preserved example with pleasing green-gold color. Abrasions and marks are tiny and unobtrusive. The strike is sharp throughout. Perhaps as few as 175 to 225 pieces remain from the original mintage of 12,822 coins, but far fewer than that survive in Choice About Uncirculated or finer grades. Population: 13 in 55, 23 finer (11/16).
