1840-C $2 1/2 AU55 PCGS. Variety 1. The North Carolina facility accomplished a mintage of 12,822 quarter eagles in 1840, the first year Christian Gobrecht's Liberty Head design was employed. Although light friction occurs over each side, the devices are needle-sharp. Bright yellow-gold surfaces house myriad small marks, including two digs near star 5. Population: 13 in 55, 23 finer (11/16).
