Liberty Quarter Eagles
1843-C $2 1/2 Large Date, Plain 4, AU58 PCGS. Variety 1. In case there is confusion between the Large and Small Date variants of the 1843-C quarter eagle, the Small Date has a crosslet 4 in the date and the Large Date has a plain 4. The Large Date is certainly the more frequently seen of the two varieties, and it is, in fact, reasonably obtainable even in higher grades. Doug Winter estimates between 250 and 300 pieces are known of the Large Date vs. 75-100 of the Small Date. The centers are just a bit soft but the margins are fully brought up. None of the usually seen heavy abrasions are present. There is an unusual lilac-colored area at the tip of the bust of Liberty. Population: 14 in 58, 12 finer (11/16).
