1856-C $2 1/2 AU50 NGC. Variety 1. Doug Winter estimates that fewer than 125 1856-C quarter eagles are extant in all grades, which suggests that the certified population figures are inflated by resubmissions. This AU coin displays relatively smooth olive-gold surfaces, but considerable strike weakness is seen on the central devices and the peripheral stars, as usual. A tiny rim nick appears at 9 o'clock on the reverse. Census: 10 in 50, 64 finer (11/16).
