Liberty Quarter Eagles
1856-D $2 1/2 AU50 PCGS. Variety 20-N. Only 874 pieces were struck of the 1856-D quarter eagle, making it the rarest quarter eagle from the Dahlonega mint, the rarest coin of any denomination struck in this mint, and it is also the most challenging to locate in high grades. The 1856-D is also the weakest struck of all D-mint quarter eagles, making it necessary to grade by remaining luster rather than high-point friction. Only 40-50 pieces are believed extant from the tiny number minted. Probably no more than 10 examples are believed to grade AU. This is a remarkable survivor with few of the usually found problems normally seen. Doug Winter comments that examples of the 1856-D are found with pebbly surfaces. Close examination shows this trait, which appears to be from minor planchet porosity. The surfaces are light orange-gold color overall and exceptionally clean; there are really no obvious marks worthy of mention or ones that can reliably be used as pedigree markers.
