Liberty Quarter Eagles
1861-S $2 1/2 AU53 PCGS. This is one of an estimated 85 survivors from a paltry production of 24,000 quarter eagles at the San Francisco Mint in 1861. Auction appearances are infrequent, especially in problem-free AU and higher. Medium yellow-gold surfaces exhibit remarkably strong detail and retain partial luster near the hidden regions of the design. Wispy abrasions occur throughout. Marks below star 13 and on the left (facing) wingtip serve as pedigree identifiers. They do not distract. Population: 7 in 53, 24 finer (11/16).
