Three Dollar Gold Pieces
1872 $3 MS62 NGC. Numismatic authors assert that the 1872 was the first three dollar gold piece that citizens saved in quantity at the time of issue. If this is true, a quick glance at current NGC and PCGS population data suggests that many of those pieces preserved fall somewhere in the About Uncirculated grade range. This is a modestly prooflike example whose coloration is a nice mix of yellow-gold and copper-rose shades. Scattered contact marks account for the MS62 grade, but we stress that none of these detractions are worthy of individual mention. Census: 14 in 62, 8 finer (10/16).
