Three Dollar Gold Pieces
1885 $3 MS63 PCGS. A paltry mintage of 801 coins drives demand for the 1885 three dollar gold piece, the second-lowest production in the series after the 1881. The Mint also struck 109 proofs that year from the same set of dies. All circulation strikes exhibit the prooflike reflectivity expected of such a low mintage. This Select rose and green-gold three dollar is no different, with pronounced contrast between the fields and frosted motifs. Definition is bold on the relief elements, including the left bow leaf, the date, and Liberty's curls. Small, wispy marks account for the grade. A spindly lint mark (as-made) travels from the E in AMERICA to the Y in LIBERTY, down through the curls, and back out into the field.
