Early Half Eagles
1795 $5 Small Eagle, BD-1, R.5 -- Tooled -- PCGS Genuine. AU Details. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/a with minor obverse die cracks but no evidence of lapping on the reverse. The first U.S. Mint gold coins were 744 half eagles delivered to the Mint treasurer on July 31, 1795, and several additional deliveries followed in August. The late Harry W. Bass, Jr., one of the top students of the early gold coinage, concluded that Breen 2-C (BD-1) was the first 1795 half eagle variety minted. This example has considerable detail on its light yellow surfaces that show extensive evidence of tooling and myriad scratches. Despite the quality, it is an historically important early half eagle.
