Early Half Eagles
1798 $5 Large Eagle, Large 8, 13 Stars Reverse, BD-2, R.5, AU53 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State d/b, or later. Both dies exhibit extensive die cracks on this late die state piece, including a crack from the border to star 1 and the curls, with a branch crack extending upward through the left field, forming a small triangular retained cud behind the hair curls. Both sides have bisecting die cracks from top to bottom. This lightly circulated example has pleasing orange-gold color with substantial luster. The surfaces are a trifle subdued, but the overall appearance is quite appealing. Population: 23 in 53, 67 finer, for all 1798 Large 8 varieties (11/16).
