Early Half Eagles
1800 $5 BD-2, High R.3, MS61 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/d. BD-2 is one of the more plentiful 1800 half eagle varieties, suitable for date or type purposes. Nonetheless, Mint State pieces are scarce. This example offers an even, well-centered strike that is sharp around the margins but lacking slightly in the very centers. Satiny straw-gold surfaces show lustrous fields and exhibit only light chatter to limit the grade. This is the latest known die state for the variety. The reverse was retired after this one use, although the obverse would go on to strike the remaining three 1800 die varieties. Housed in a green label holder. Population (all 1800 varieties): 15 in 61, 51 finer (11/16).
