Early Half Eagles
1809/8 $5 BD-1, High R.3, PCGS Genuine. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/b. The PCGS number ending in .98 suggests surface damage as the reason, or perhaps one of the reasons, that PCGS deemed this coin not gradable. In our opinion, this coin has the details of an About Uncirculated specimen that has been cleaned and repaired. The design elements were sharply impressed and show just a trace of high-point wear. According to Mint records, 33,875 Capped Bust Left half eagles were struck in 1809, all from the same pair of dies. Traditionally , the date has been called 1809/8, but expert opinion is divided about the overdate status of this issue, as many numismatists believe the undertype digit is really just another 9.
