Liberty Half Eagles
1839-D $5 AU50 NGC. Variety 2-A. The 1839-D is the first emission in the Liberty Head series, representing a single-year type. The portrait was modified in 1840, and and the mintmark moved from the obverse to the reverse. The latter characteristic combined with the issue's low mintage of 18,939 coins contribute to the remarkably popularity of the 1839-D. This partly lustrous orange-gold five shows strong detail on the eagle and moderate softness over the hair curls and stars. Wispy marks on each side do not detract. Housed in a prior generation holder. Census: 10 in 50, 49 finer (11/16).
