Liberty Half Eagles
1839-D $5 AU53 PCGS. Variety 1-A. This is the significantly scarcer die variety of the two known for the 1839-D. The '39-D is a distinctive one-year design type and it is the only Liberty half eagle with an obverse mintmark. Of the 18.939 pieces struck, it is estimated that 200-225 examples are extant. Of the known survivors, at least two-thirds are VF or XF. This is a bright piece that shows slight reddish patina surrounding the devices and the usual choppy surfaces.
