Liberty Half Eagles
1842-D $5 Small Date AU53 PCGS. Variety 7-E. Die scratches are plainly visible near (L)IB(ERTY). Small Date half eagles were struck during the first part of the year and are seen with far greater frequency than their Large Date brethren. Red-violet tones complement the rich orange-gold color that dominates this pleasing Dahlonega five dollar gold piece. Typically struck over the hair curls but with good detail on the stars. The eagle, too, exhibits bold feather, talon, and olive leaf definition.
