Liberty Half Eagles
1844-D $5 AU58 PCGS. Variety 11-G. The top of the 1 is repunched. Doug Winter estimates 400 to 500 1844-D half eagles are extant, making this one of the more collectible Dahlonega five dollar gold issues overall. However, only 10 or 12 Mint State representatives are thought to survive in better condition than this nearly Uncirculated piece. Deep orange-gold surfaces reveal tinges of violet and blue toning. The relief elements are strongly impressed, and partial luster glows from the recesses. Lightly marked.
