Liberty Half Eagles
1846-D $5 AU50 NGC. Variety 16-I. The date is low, and the Dahlonega mintmark shows no sign of repunching. Luster brightens the stars, legends, and device crevices. The fields and portrait are generally smooth for an AU gold coin. The dies appear perfect except for minor clashing near Liberty's chin. Of the 80,294 pieces that were produced, it appears that only 175-225 examples are known today, the vast majority of which are VF-XF.
