Liberty Half Eagles
1846-D/D $5 AU50 NGC. Variety 16-J. One of the more spectacular mintmark blunders of the entire federal series, where a primary D overlaps a misplaced secondary D south by a large spread, earning a separate listing in the Guide Book. Two varieties feature the Repunched Mintmark -- paired with either a Low Date and a High Date obverse. This is an example of the Low Date variant. Minor marks and abrasions exist on both sides, with moderate wear on the high points of the hair and eagle. A pleasing bright, yellow-gold example. Census: 12 in 50, 72 finer (10/16).
