Liberty Half Eagles
1851-C $5 MS60 NGC. Variety 1. The 1851-C half eagle is a challenging date overall, although Mint State examples are decidedly rare. Doug Winter estimates that only four or five true Mint State pieces exist, despite a population of 21 Uncirculated coins between NGC and PCGS combined. Resubmissions may be reflected in the latter figure, and we estimate that the true number of Mint State survivors resides about midway between these two extremes. The present coin displays strikingly original luster and lightly abraded yellow-gold fields. Strike weakness on the hair curls around Liberty's face is not unusual for the issue. Eye appeal exceeds expectations. Census: 3 in 60, 12 finer (10/16).
