Liberty Half Eagles
1855-D $5 Medium D AU53 NGC. Variety 38-CC. The scarcest Dahlonega half eagle from the 1850s, the 1855-D is very scarce in AU condition with attractive color and the Medium D mintmark -- all of which is true for this attractive, orange-gold example. Mint luster clings to the stars and around the letters of the reverse legend. As usual, the strike is a bit flat at the centers and the eagle lacks feather definition on its neck and head. Still, there is much to like about this challenging D-Mint coin. Doug Winter estimates just 125 to 150 pieces survive, most in grades lower than this solid AU53 example. Census: 12 in 53, 36 finer (10/16).
