Liberty Half Eagles
1855-D $5 Medium D MS60 NGC. Variety 38-CC. The 1855-D is a scarce and often-overlooked Dahlonega five dollar. The mintage was 22,432 pieces, a number that does not indicate rarity by itself. However, it seems apparent from the number of survivors that attrition from circulation took a heavy toll on the number produced. Only 125-150 pieces are believed known today in all grades. At least two-thirds of the survivors are VF or XF with only two or three dozens examples remaining in AU, and three to five Uncirculated pieces believed known. This is a bright Uncirculated piece that displays a noticeably striated reverse die. The fields are semiprooflike, as often found on D and C-mint gold, and there are only small, scattered abrasions evident on both obverse and reverse. Remarkably well-detailed on the obverse, the reverse shows a bit of strike softness on the eagle's neck feathers.
