Liberty Half Eagles
1855-S $5 AU55 NGC. The half eagle was a workhorse denomination in West Coast commerce. Even a moderately large mintage of 61,000 pieces did not survive to any great extent, with most coins lost to normal attrition. This Choice About Uncirculated example saw brief circulation, but it was soon set aside and well-preserved thereafter. Natural orange-gold patina retains much mint luster and sharpness of strike. Only minor chatter disturbs the attractive surfaces. Census: 19 in 55, 19 finer (10/16).
