Liberty Half Eagles
1857-D $5 XF45 PCGS. CAC. Variety 42-HH. The 1857-D is a scarce and underrated issue from the Dahlonega mint. Only 17,046 pieces were produced, and of that number an estimated 150-200 examples are known in all grades. The grade distribution is the typical bell curve with 30-40 coins in VF, 70-100 in XF, 43-52 in AU, and a paltry 7-8 in Uncirculated. Even high-point friction is seen over the devices on each side. The only marks of consequence are a lamination on the obverse rim at 9 o'clock and a long but shallow mark above the eagle's head on the reverse. Original reddish-tinged surfaces retain faint portions of mint luster in the protected areas.
