Liberty Half Eagles
1857-S $5 AU58 PCGS. The 1857-S half eagle saw extensive use in the channels of commerce during the California Gold Rush. Consequently, most known survivors are in circulated grades. Only 11 of the 134 submissions seen by PCGS are in mint condition. This near-Mint example displays yellow-gold surfaces with luster residing in the recessed areas. The design elements are sharply impressed, and there are fewer marks than might be expected for a gold coin having seen some circulation. Population: 20 in 58, 11 finer (11/16).
