Liberty Half Eagles
1858-D $5 AU50 NGC. Winter's Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint (2013) notes that the 1858-D is "generally overlooked, but it is actually scarcer than most collectors believe. It is much harder to find than the 1859-D and 1860-D ... ." There are probably only 200 to 250 survivors, about 100 of which are in AU condition. All 1858-D half eagles (15,362 coins struck) show softness at the centers, as is seen here. High-point rub is moderate, and the surfaces show lovely reddish-gold tinges.
