1859-D $5 Medium D AU50 NGC. CAC. Medium D mintmark. With the second-lowest mintage of the D-Mint fives, the 1859-D is surprisingly more-available than its low mintage of 10,336 pieces suggests. Among the estimated 175 to 225 survivors in all grades, coins with original color are in the minority, as are specimens with smooth surfaces such as this CAC-endorsed example. Apricot-gold fields and devices show only light pinpoint marks and moderate wear, with a bit of central strike weakness that always accompanies the issue. Census: 4 in 50, 72 finer. CAC: 1 in 50, 10 finer (10/16).
