Liberty Half Eagles
1861-C $5 AU55 NGC. Variety 1. State II. The 1861-C is an immensely popular issue in the Charlotte series, far in excess of its actual rarity. This was the final issue from the Charlotte mint with production that stopped shortly after Confederate troops seized control on April 20, 1861. Much of the issue's popularity revolves around this seizure and the uncertainty that followed. How many coins were struck under CSA authority? Can these "Confederate" pieces be definitely identified? The traditional answer (unsubstantiated by any documented facts) is the pieces that show a die crack through the top of AMERI are the final ones struck, therefore they were struck under the auspices of the Confederacy.
Almost all known 1861-C fives show choppy surfaces, and that is the case on this coin as well. The strike details are a bit soft over the high points of the design, but not noticeably so as seen on other, previous C-mint issues. Each side shows bright orange-gold color and just the slightest traces of luster remain around the margins.
