Liberty Half Eagles
1862 $5 XF45 NGC. After the federal government ceased paying out gold, the mintage for half eagles dropped from 688,084 pieces in 1861 to only 4,430 coins in 1862. Predictably, an example of the 1862 is very difficult to obtain. This example shows slight, even wear over the high points and small abrasions scattered overall. The only mark worthy of mention is a shallow, horizontal pinscratch between the eagle's head and left (facing) wing.
