Liberty Half Eagles
1876-CC $5 AU50 NGC. Variety 1-A. The only known dies, used for a small production of 6,887 half eagles at Carson City in 1876. A raised die lump on Liberty's neck is diagnostic for the obverse. The small CC mintmark is high in the field, close to the tip of the arrow feather. This exceptional light yellow example has pleasing surfaces that exhibit traces of luster and trivial hairlines. A few scattered marks are mostly insignificant. Despite a higher certified population, only about a dozen 1876-CC half eagles grade AU or better. Census: 8 in 50, 24 finer (10/16).
