Liberty Half Eagles
1876-S $5 VF30 NGC. A glass reveals minuscule marks on each side of this subdued yellow-gold example. Half eagles were coined at Philadelphia, Carson City, and San Francisco in 1876, and Carson City had the highest mintage at 6,887 coins. San Francisco was next with a mintage of only 4,000 pieces, and Philadelphia produced 1,432 circulation strikes. The date is challenging regardless of the mintmark. Census: 3 in 30, 14 finer (11/16).
