Indian Half Eagles
1909-O $5 -- Improperly Cleaned -- NGC Details. Unc. In Gem condition, the Indian half eagle series is riddled with challenging acquisitions. But in circulated condition and in the lower Mint State grades, there are really only three dates that pose a roadblock for collectors. These are the 1929, 1911-D, and 1909-O. Of these, the 1909-O is arguably the most difficult acquisition. A problem-free but low-end Mint State example can easily cross the $30,000 price level at auction, and a piece that shows more luster than bagmarks can surpass the $50,000 barrier with ease. The present example offers a more affordable option for the budget-conscious collector. The coin is unworn, but the surfaces are unnaturally bright due to cleaning. Close inspection reveals faint planchet striations in the fields and lower headdress feathers, leftover from a slightly incomplete strike. Abrasions are relatively minor, giving the coin a boost of appeal in that regard. The mintmark is bold. Due to the rarity and prohibitive prices of most Mint State examples, this still-pleasing 1909-O may be the finest that most collectors of this popular series can reasonably acquire.
