Liberty Eagles
1838 $10 AU50 PCGS. Not since 1804 had the Mint manufactured ten dollar gold coins when the first Liberty Head eagles were struck 34 years later in 1838. Output amounted to 7,200 coins, just another factor that contributes to the popularity of this first-year issue. Additionally, the obverse portrait design was only employed through part of 1839 before being slightly modified, creating a two-year subtype that collectors are always looking to acquire. Unfortunately, demand for the 1838 vastly outpaces supply. About 80 to 100 coins are thought to survive. This bright yellow-gold representative shows softness on the stars and a hint of friction over the remaining devices. Still, the impression is bold. Myriad marks throughout. Population: 8 in 50, 19 finer (11/16).
