Liberty Eagles
1839/8 $10 Large Letters -- Harshly Cleaned -- NGC Details. AU. Type of 1838. The 25,801 eagles struck in 1839 featured the original ornate Liberty head of 1838, while later strikes from this year showed the modified portrait that would be used until 1907. The type coin appeal of this early issue is significant. The present piece displays sharp interior detail with some weakness on peripheral stars. The surfaces are fairly smooth with medium olive-gold coloration. Vigorous cleaning from years ago subdues the luster.
