1856-O $10 AU55 NGC. Variety 3. The decline of California gold deposits at the New Orleans Mint after the San Francisco Mint became operational in 1854, is evident in the small 14,500-coin mintage of the 1856-O eagle. The date is scarce in high AU grades, and Mint State coins are rare. This Choice AU representative displays a bold strike and reflective yellow-gold fields. Scattered contact marks are consistent with the grade. Census: 24 in 55 (1 in 55+★), 21 finer (10/16).
