1859-S $10 XF45 PCGS. Out of the 7,000 ten dollar gold coins struck in California in 1859, it is believed a paltry 45 examples survive. The issue is a major rarity in any grade, but largely underappreciated as such. The coins' extensive usage in Western commercial transactions and the dearth of contemporary collectors interested in mintmarks explains the issue's meager survivorship. Despite obvious signs of circulation in the form of blending and scattered abrasions, this Choice XF eagle offers attractive orange-gold color and flashes of luster within some of the reverse design recesses. Population: 10 in 45, 10 finer (11/16).
