Liberty Eagles
1864 $10 VF30 NGC. The 1864 ten dollar had a paltry mintage of only 3,580 pieces, attributable to the Civil War and the non-convertibility of the newly issued "green backs" issued to fund the war. Garrett-Guth point out that on average only two pieces appear at auction per year. This piece shows the numerous, small abrasions peppered across each side one would expect from a coin that has seen 30 points of circulation. The surfaces are bright overall with even friction over the high points of the design.
