Proof Liberty Eagles
1902 $10 -- Altered Surfaces -- PCGS Genuine. Unc Details. Response to the Mint's experiment with an all-brilliant proof finish (usually lacking any significant field/device contrast) was less than overwhelming, even with a mintage of only 113 pieces. Most eagles were part of gold proof sets, yet best estimates suggest only 30 to 35 pieces survive. Some whitish cloudiness on the obverse of this example and underlying fine hairlines suggest an effort to enhanced the mirrorlike surfaces. The reverse also shows signs of a light polish, as well as a reddish alloy spot above E of STATES. Despite the lack of a numeric grade, this is clearly one of the elusive 1902 proofs, which are rare and desirable in any grade. The reflective, rich-gold color retains substantial appeal.
