The double eagle denomination was introduced in 1850, an important consideration for type purposes, and a large mintage of 1.1 million coins was accomplished at the Philadelphia Mint. This Choice XF specimen exhibits light wear on the well-detailed design elements and the still-lustrous orange-gold surfaces show the expected number of minor contact marks for the grade.
